Associate Professor The sphere of my interests, as an organic chemist, is connected with synthesis and investigation of physicochemical properties of organic compounds of a potential biological activity with particular regard to fluorescent derivatives of cytosine and uracil. I am also involved in a synthesis and study of photophysics of alloxazine and isoalloxazine derivatives in solutions. As analytical techniques to identification and investigation of the compounds I use mass spectrometry, especially EIMS and ESI MS as well as IR and NMR spectroscopy.

My research interests focus on two basic aspects related to the phenomenon of photocatalysis, the photocatalyst and the light source. Hence, I use innovative synthesis techniques to obtain defined semiconductor materials, such as a microwave-assisted process. The next part examines the comprehensive physicochemical characteristics of synthesized materials to determine their potential for removing organic pollutants. An inseparable issue is also designing light sources based on LEDs, characterized by a monochromatic light source and low energy consumption. This comprehensive approach allows me to use tailor-made photocatalytic systems in photooxidation processes.

I have been conducting basic materials surface and interface science of condensed molecular solids, polymers, in connection with future organic molecular electronics. I used a wide variety of experimental techniques in order to probe the electronic, chemical, magnetic and structural properties of the materials systems. My main focus is on using X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) which provides information about the chemical composition of a surface. It can determine the surface concentration of elements present and bonding states such as the molecular environment.

I am involved in basic research concerning photophysical and photochemical reactions of flavin derivatives in solutions in order to describe fundamental molecular processes they undergo in the ground and excited state. Special part of my study is related to a search of such flavin derivatives which are efficient singlet oxygen sensitizers. Absorption and emission spectroscopy, time-resolved fluorometry, HPLC, photochemical synthesis on analytical and preparative scale are the methods and techniques I routinely use in my research.
